The Facts

Why 100% Cotton

Cotton isn't nostalgia. It's a 7,000-year-old performance fabric that outperforms plastic on the metrics that matter.

700K

Microplastics per wash

A single polyester garment sheds this many fibers into rivers and oceans. Cotton sheds zero.

Weeks

Not centuries

Cotton returns to soil in weeks. Every polyester shirt ever made still exists somewhere.

30%

Cooler to wear

Cotton fibers let air flow and wick moisture. Polyester traps heat and sweat.

3–5+

Years of wear

Quality cotton softens with every wash. Polyester pills, stretches, and holds odors.

The Cotton Truth

Polyester is plastic. Literally.

Polyester is a petroleum-based synthetic — chemically the same family as the plastic in water bottles. About 60% of all clothing produced today is made from it, because it's roughly 30% cheaper to produce than cotton. The savings go to the manufacturer. The costs — microplastic pollution, chemical treatments, faster replacement — go to everyone else.

Why labels lie

"Cotton blend" can mean 60% plastic. "Wrinkle-free" usually means treated with formaldehyde resin. "Easy care" often means coated in chemicals. "Performance fabric" is marketing for plastic. The fashion industry spent 50 years teaching us euphemisms — the tag is the only place the law forces them to tell the truth.

How to read a fabric label

  • Flip the shirt. Find the fiber content tag — legally required to be accurate.
  • "100% cotton" means what it says. "Cotton blend" means part plastic.
  • "Polyester," "nylon," "acrylic," "spandex" — all synthetics, all petroleum-derived.
  • Check GSM if listed: 150–180 is thin; 200+ is heavyweight and built to last.
The real cost of cheap: a $12 polyester shirt costs $30–60 over five years once you count replacements and odor-fighting detergent. A $24.99 cotton tee costs about the same or less — and never sheds a microplastic.
