Why CottonTruth exists — and what we refuse to compromise on.
The world is wearing plastic. 60% of all clothing produced today is made from polyester — a petroleum-based synthetic fiber that is, quite literally, the same material family as water bottles. We were sold a lie: that synthetic fabrics are modern, convenient, superior. The truth is that polyester is cheap. Not good, not innovative — just cheap to produce, with the true cost paid by everyone except the manufacturer.
Every polyester garment ever made still exists. They shed 700,000 microplastic fibers per wash — into rivers, oceans, food, bodies. They harbor 10x more bacteria than natural fibers. They're treated with formaldehyde. They take 200 years to decompose. They pill, stink, trap heat, and fall apart — then we throw them away and buy more. This is not a fashion problem. It's a health problem, an environmental crisis, and a collective failure of common sense.
Cotton. A plant. A fiber humans have used for 7,000 years. It breathes, regulating temperature naturally. It absorbs moisture instead of trapping it. It softens with every wash. It lasts 3–5 years of regular wear. It returns to the earth in months. We don't need to invent a better fabric. We need to remember the one we abandoned.
The fashion industry spent 50 years renaming plastic “performance fabric.” We call it what it is. 100% cotton means 100% cotton — no euphemisms, no greenwashing.
“Wrinkle-free” means coated in formaldehyde resin. “Easy care” means treated with chemicals. We'd rather you spend two minutes with a steamer than wear a known carcinogen next to your skin eight hours a day.
Polyester is ~30% cheaper to produce. We could make more money using it. We won't. The environmental cost is not a line item we're willing to optimize away.
A shirt you wear twice and discard is not a bargain. We make garments designed to last years, not seasons. Buy fewer. Buy better. Wear them longer.
Informed people make better choices. Our job isn't to convince you — it's to give you the facts, the science, and the data, and let you decide.
Every CottonTruth garment is 100% cotton (no blends, no exceptions), honestly labeled, built heavyweight to last, transparently sourced, and reasonably priced. Quality cotton shouldn't be a luxury. It should be the standard.
We're not asking you to burn your polyester. We're asking you to think before you buy the next one. Check the label. Ask what it's made of, what it's treated with, and where it goes when you're done with it. And when you're ready for clothing made from a plant instead of a petroleum byproduct — we'll be here.
Wear What's Real.
